Our Story
We began in the second-hand book trade in 2008, buying and reselling collections from across the UK.
As the business developed, it became clear that the most complex — and most important — work involved helping families clear books after bereavement, residential-care transitions or house sales.
Books often represent decades of study and collecting. Clearing them can be emotionally difficult as well as physically demanding. These experiences shaped the way we now operate: calmly, discreetly and with a focus on reducing stress for executors and families.
That is why we simplified how we work.
Our Family Team
The Book Buyer is run by Alan and Gemma.
Alan oversees enquiries, reviews estate libraries from photographs and coordinates collections with families, executors and solicitors.
Gemma manages office operations, customer service and processing oversight, ensuring that as many books as possible are prepared carefully for new owners and that they are described accurately and dispatched securely.
They work alongside a small, trusted team who handle packing, lifting and transport at the property.
Once collections arrive at our premises, books are carefully sorted and condition-checked. Suitable titles are prepared for sale, while others are directed toward appropriate redistribution, donation or recycling — ensuring libraries are treated responsibly from removal through to their second life with new owners.
This structure allows the business to remain personal, accountable and reliable at every stage of the estate-clearance process.
